Upon its creation in 2002, the Foundation committed to donating $1.5 million to establish and fund the François-Karl Viau Research Chair in Pediatric Oncogenomics.
The research chair, overseen by Dr. Daniel Sinnett, has been financially independent since 2005, following the last disbursement of its funding, and has been self-funded since then.
The primary objective of the chair is to apply genomics to pediatric oncology.
This is an innovative research field that combines techniques from molecular biology, genetics, and molecular epidemiology to discover the various variants in genes and proteins involved in the etiology of cancer in children.
Treating childhood cancer is one of the great successes of modern medicine. The cure rate has increased from less than 20% just 25 years ago to over 80% today. Despite this success, cancer remains the leading cause of death from disease in children. It is urgent to save these 20% of children who do not respond to current treatments and who will die from their disease.
Daniel Sinnett, PhD
Thanks to the expertise developed since the establishment of this chair – the only one of its kind in Canada – and thanks to access to new technologies, researchers are now able to interrogate the genome (the book of life consisting of 3 billion letters) of tumours.
These dramatic advances pave the way for personalized and targeted medicine based on the child’s genetic profile, with the aim of providing increasingly precise therapeutic responses.
This is a source of great pride for the Fondation des Gouverneurs de l’espoir!
